Heavy Rain Hits Phuket July 30: Slippery Roads, Flooding War

Phuket is experiencing heavy rainfall across the island today, July 30th, leading to slippery roads and widespread waterlogging. Motorcyclists are urged to exercise extreme caution for their safety.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued warnings of continuous heavy to very heavy rain for Phuket and the Andaman coast until July 30th. This is due to a monsoon trough extending across the upper North and Northeast of Thailand, combined with a relatively strong southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. These conditions are expected to bring thunderstorms to 70% of the area, with heavy rainfall in Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi, and isolated very heavy rain in Ranong.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has also alerted residents in 61 provinces nationwide, including those on the western coast of the South, to be prepared for potential flash floods, forest run-off, and landslides between July 26th and 30th. This is a direct consequence of accumulated rainfall and the strengthening southwest monsoon. Furthermore, marine conditions in the upper Andaman Sea are anticipated to be rather rough, with waves reaching 2-3 meters and exceeding 3 meters during thunderstorms. Mariners, especially small boats in the upper Andaman Sea, are advised to remain ashore during this period.

Road conditions in Phuket are currently hazardous, with numerous routes experiencing waterlogging and slippery surfaces. Areas particularly affected include Phuket Town, Patong, Kathu, and the winding Patong Hill road. These locations are historically prone to flooding during the monsoon season. Driving in such weather presents significant challenges for all road users, especially motorcyclists.

To ensure maximum safety while traveling, motorcyclists should adhere to the following critical advice:

• Reduce Speed and Increase Distance: Wet and slippery roads drastically increase braking distances. Reducing your speed and maintaining at least double the usual following distance from other vehicles will provide crucial reaction time in emergencies.
• Check Tires and Brakes: Regularly inspect your motorbike's tire tread to ensure effective water dispersion and check that your braking system is fully functional. On wet surfaces, apply brakes gently and use both front and rear brakes simultaneously to prevent wheel lock-up and loss of balance.
• Avoid Flooded Routes: Steer clear of areas with standing water. Flooded sections may conceal potholes or debris that can cause a loss of control or damage to your motorbike.
• Use Headlights: Turning on your headlights significantly improves visibility, both for you to see the road ahead and for other vehicles to see you, particularly during heavy rain and reduced visibility.
• Extra Caution on Hills and Curves: Areas like Patong Hill and other curved roads become exceptionally slippery in the rain. Approach these sections at a reduced speed and navigate turns smoothly, avoiding sudden steering inputs or abrupt changes in acceleration.
• Wear Protective Gear: Always wear a full-face helmet with a clear visor to shield from rain and improve vision, and bright-colored rain gear to enhance your visibility to others.
